Useful Information
Time/clock : The clock is an hour ahead in Britain compared to the rest of Europe. Summer time starts end of March and lasts until the end of October.
Currency : British pounds.
Electricity : The standard voltage is the whole country is 240V. Plugs have three poles. You might need an adaptor which is easily found in supermarket, airports or white goods shops.
Phone calls : In order to call Great Britain from abroad you will need to dial the international code 00 44 followed by the person's number. From Great Britain to your country, please refer to an international code table. The students will be able to phone home, in order to say they have arrived safely. The student will be able to phone home from time to time or to be phoned. Although we do not want to restrict these communications it is not advised for a student to phone or be phoned too often for different reasons: it breaks the immersion we are seeking and can, for some students, start a home-sickness. So phone communications are advised not to be too often or long.
Internet access : for most of the courses, the students will have regular access throughout the week to the Internet and will therefore be able to communicate via e-mails.
Weather : The weather can be a little unpredictable. It is recommended to take water proof, warm and practical clothing.
Journey from the host family to The Language Room: The host family is responsible for the drop off and pickup of their student from The Language Room. However for students older than 12, the student is strongly encouraged to make their own way to and from The Language Room each day.
Food : In general, lunch in Britain is relatively small, usually comprising sandwiches and a fruit. It is advised to try to adapt to the habits of the country by enjoying a good breakfast!
Documents needed to enter Great Britain: Depending on the country of departure, a valid passport or identity card is required. An under 18 years old person might also need a permission signed by the parents. However it is strongly advisable to check with your local authority which documents are needed prior to travelling.
Pocket Money : The student will be hosted on a full board basis. The host family is welcoming the student like another member of the family, to make sure the student is safe, happy and well cared for. Linen can be washed (a small bag per week). However even though the host family will look after and will assure the wellbeing and safety of the student, there is no requirements from them to show the students around and offer leisure activities. The student can bring some pocket money, like he/she would do at home to buy souvenirs. All activities specifically offered by The Language Room are included in the price.
The price includes: Administrative costs, language lessons, sports training, sports equipment (see course details), English teaching materials, full board accommodation in host families or residence, activities and excursions, support and emergency number available 24/7, the airport reception (transfer from the airport to Edinburgh at the family home / residence on arrival and from the host family / residence to Edinburgh Airport on departure)
